UPDATE - 2/26/08 - Cave Gear Situation

Greetings MaCa Volunteers,

Most of you have probably heard of the bat affliction called White Nose Syndrome (WNS).  Not a lot is known about it at this time, but it is thought to be linked somehow with the deaths of thousands of bats in New York and Vermont.  Several states in the northeast and eastern United States have already ordered caves used by bats to be closed partly because of the possibility of cavers spreading WNS.

As a precautionary measure the National Park Service is asking all cavers involved in projects at Mammoth Cave to voluntarily take measures to ensure their equipment is clean and  disinfected with a bleach solution or something similar.  Once you have it clean you should try to keep it separate from any other source that may contaminate it again (such as the trunk of your car, etc.) by perhaps putting it in palstic garbage bags.

Also, if you have been caving in New York or Vermont anytime within the last two years, they ask that you not bring the gear you used to Mammoth Cave.

The Mammoth Cave Restoration Camps exist for one reason: to protect and restore the caves and karst landscape in Mammoth Cave National Park.  Lets all do our part to make sure this scourge doesn't show up at MaCa by complying with this reasonable request from the Park Service.

Roy Vanhoozer, Camp Director
